Why am I cutting a perfectly beautiful pair of jeans!!!??!!!!!
(I'm not actually thinking that...I know what I'm doing; but its probably what you're thinking right?)
Actually this is my third pair of shorts made from a pair of jeans. Its a pair that nobody seems to fit, that's been sitting in a cupboard with another 50 or so pairs waiting to be made into jean quilts by a fantastic funky sewer Rhiannon. We had jeans coming out of our ears so I made one into something slightly more useful (I'm hoping)-shorts for my sister. I'm slightly obsessed with the distressing process (and I didnt even take out the bleach on these!)
I started by chopping the legs off, realizing only seconds before i cut it that it needs to be angled down to the crotch, or else, when they're worn you will end up with a unique style: short in the middle and longer on the outside of the legs....but by all means, if that's the style your going for, rock it!
I've made a pair without stitching, so the frayed edges have strings hanging off and all sorts of interesting worn out patched, but these jeans already have a stunning bleached out/crinkled design so i didn't want to go over the top. Instead I folded over the bottom about 2.5 cm and stitched the edge.

The denim automatically started fraying but i wanted the fluffy look, so i grabbed a brush (yes, that's mum's kitchen brush....generally i use a super course scrubbing brush but it was hiding from me at the time =( ) After giving the raw edges a good hard scrub, threads that stuck out were pulled as far as possible and then trimmed.

The end result? A 'neatly' shabby-fied pair of shorts transformed from a pair of unused jeans! Cool right?! Now you'll never see an old pair of jeans as junk anymore =)
